Networking Scripts for After a Layoff

What to say to your network without sounding desperate.

Your 2-sentence explanation

Before you reach out to anyone, write your standard explanation: “My role at [Company] was eliminated as part of a restructuring. I’m now focused on [target role type] and would appreciate any connections or leads you might have.” Keep it factual. Do not over-explain. Do not badmouth. Pivot immediately to what you are looking for.

Warm outreach script

For people you know well: “Hi [Name], I wanted to let you know that my role at [Company] was recently eliminated. I’m looking for my next opportunity in [area/role type]. If you know anyone I should connect with or hear of anything relevant, I’d really appreciate a heads-up. Happy to share more details if helpful.” Short. Direct. Easy for them to act on.

Cold but targeted outreach

For people you do not know well but who work in your target area: “Hi [Name], I’m a [role type] with [X years] of experience in [area]. I’m exploring new opportunities and noticed your work at [Company]. Would you be open to a 15-minute call to share any advice about the space? No pressure either way.” Ask small. Make it easy to say yes.

Follow-up script

After a conversation: “Thanks for taking the time today. Your suggestion about [specific thing] was really helpful. I’m going to follow up on [action]. If anything else comes to mind, I’d love to hear it. Happy to return the favor anytime.” Always follow up within 24 hours. Always reference something specific from the conversation.

The update message

Send every 2–3 weeks to your active network: “Quick update — I’m still exploring [role type] opportunities. This week I’m focused on [specific area/company type]. If anything crosses your radar, I’d appreciate a ping. Thanks for keeping me in mind.” Consistency beats desperation. Stay visible without being annoying.
